Cap’n Jazz - Little League
In high school I was really insecure about my music taste. I felt I had to know any and everything about every band ever. In the midst of that, I became really infatuated with the Chicago music scene in the late 90s and early 00s. I bought Cap’n Jazz’s “Analphabetology” and I remember having the primal desire to write the opening lyrics on every surface, but at the same time I knew how special this cd was for me and I kept it to myself. It was one of the few bands I did my best to keep from my blatant vain attempts to feel accepted.

The Anniversary - The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter
I remember lying to security at Showplace Theatre “I am having a lady emergency” to get something from my car that wasn’t a lady emergency and then thinking I was so cool hanging out upstairs with The Anniversary and Apollo Sunshine.

Braid - Forever Got Shorter
sometimes gorgeous can be frustration
when your life
is nothing
but an honorable mention
on a radio
on a radio
maybe i’m a baby but i think it’s time to grow
you’re everthing i live for
-ever got shorter
you begged me not to go
forever i’ll know
on a radio
better i’m a quitter than a starry tortured soul
you’re everything i live for
-ever got shorter
i begged you not to go

For the Young Who Want To, Marge Piercy
Talent is what they say
you have after the novel
is published and favorably
reviewed. Beforehand what
you have is a tedious
delusion, a hobby like knitting.
Work is what you have done
after the play is produced
and the audience claps.
Before that friends keep asking
when you are planning to go
out and get a job.
Genius is what they know you
had after the third volume
of remarkable poems. Earlier
they accuse you of withdrawing,
ask why you don’t have a baby,
call you a bum.
The reason people want M.F.A.’s,
take workshops with fancy names
when all you can really
learn is a few techniques,
typing instructions and some-
body else’s mannerisms
is that every artist lacks
a license to hang on the wall
like your optician, your vet
proving you may be a clumsy sadist
whose fillings fall into the stew
but you’re certified a dentist.
The real writer is one
who really writes. Talent
is an invention like phlogiston
after the fact of fire.
Work is its own cure. You have to
like it better than being loved.

Kriss Kross - Jump
My older cousins liked this, so therefore it was “kool” and I liked it.
“Kris Kross was a teenage rap duo of the early 1990s. The duo is most famous for their 1992 hit “Jump,” and their fashion styling—consisting of wearing their clothes backwards.” - wikipedia
